Welcome to the enchanting world of homemade delights, where the magic of Christmas comes alive in every bite. Today, we’re diving into a project that promises not only delectable results but also cherished memories for the entire family: crafting exquisite Christmas chocolate truffles. These luxurious treats are more than just a dessert; they are a delightful undertaking that brings people together, fostering laughter and creativity in the kitchen. Moreover, when beautifully packaged, they transform into truly personable and irresistible edible gifts, perfect for spreading holiday cheer.

My culinary journey with the famed Jamie Oliver began decades ago, sparked by a quirky nickname: “The Naked Chef.” It was the 90s, and I was a university student in the US, far removed from the burgeoning food scene that would later define networks like The Food Network. Lacking a television, my imagination ran wild at the mention of such a provocative moniker. “Is he actually cooking naked? Who is this intriguing character?” I wondered, as my boss at the time enthusiastically introduced me to a revolutionary new method of cooking chicken – a technique inspired by this enigmatic chef. Little did I know, “The Naked Chef” was no fleeting trend; Jamie Oliver was here to stay, fundamentally reshaping how many of us approach home cooking.
Allow me to openly confess: I am, without a doubt, a devoted fan of Jamie Oliver. As a busy working mother constantly juggling responsibilities and precious little free time, his cookbooks are consistently my first choice when I need a quick, reliable, and utterly delicious dinner solution. I have prepared countless recipes from his extensive collection, and each one has been a resounding success. What I adore most about his philosophy is his no-nonsense, straight-to-business approach – his uncanny ability to extract maximum flavor in the least amount of time. This ethos perfectly aligns with my own needs and desires in the kitchen. I simply don’t have the luxury of extended cooking sessions, and I deeply appreciate that he challenged the conventional wisdom, proving that fast food can and should be incredibly tasty. This belief has become my guiding principle. Of course, even my culinary hero has his quirks; Jamie Oliver has an undeniable fondness for chilies and lemons. For those who share my palate, a friendly tip: consider halving the amounts he suggests for these ingredients. It’s a trick I’ve learned and regularly employ!

So, when the opportunity arose to review Jamie Oliver’s Christmas Cookbook, declining was simply not an option. After all, it was Jamie, and it was Christmas – two of my favorite things! The excitement was palpable, and I couldn’t wait to delve into its festive pages. To add to the holiday spirit, I’m thrilled to announce that we are hosting an exclusive giveaway! Keep an eye out for details below on how you can win one of three copies of this magnificent cookbook, a perfect companion for your holiday cooking adventures.

From the moment I first opened Jamie Oliver’s Christmas Cookbook, I was captivated. The familiar, vibrant photography and the sheer abundance of recipes I instantly longed to create filled me with a sense of culinary anticipation. This isn’t merely a collection of holiday recipes; it’s a meticulously crafted, comprehensive guide designed to ensure your Christmas celebrations are joyous, delicious, and, most importantly, stress-free. I often find myself puzzled when people describe the Christmas season as stressful. For me, it embodies pure joy and relaxation, experiences profoundly enhanced by incredible food. Perhaps my deep love for cooking plays a role in this perspective. However, even if your enthusiasm for the kitchen doesn’t quite match mine, Jamie’s Christmas Cookbook offers invaluable assistance to navigate the festive season with ease and confidence.

The book thoughtfully begins with a treasure trove of practical, sensible tips covering everything from efficient holiday shopping and the art of delegating tasks to meticulous advance planning. These foundational strategies are crucial for ensuring that Christmas Day unfolds with seamless perfection. Its structure is ingeniously organized, breaking down the grand holiday dinner into manageable, themed courses: from enticing STARTERS that set the tone, to the magnificent MAIN EVENT (catering equally to both meat lovers and vegetarians), dedicated chapters for glorious POTATOES (because, let’s be honest, they deserve their own spotlight!), an array of vibrant VEGETABLE SIDES, and essential sections for rich GRAVIES AND SAUCES, before finally culminating in delightful DESSERTS and SWEETS. The inclusion of a standalone meat-roasting guide is another testament to its practicality. Having such a wealth of helpful guidance and perfectly orchestrated recipes within a single volume is an absolute game-changer and an immense time-saver during the typically hectic holiday period.

Beyond the main feast, another aspect of the book that truly resonated with me is its extensive collection of recipes dedicated to leftovers. It creatively transforms holiday remnants into exciting new meals, ensuring nothing goes to waste. Furthermore, it offers inspiring post-Christmas recipes, such as invigorating spicy curries and refreshing salads, designed to help us gracefully transition out of the indulgent holiday lull and embrace lighter, yet still flavorful, fare. This foresight truly makes the cookbook a valuable resource long after the main celebrations have concluded.
A particularly appealing chapter is dedicated entirely to homemade edible gifts. As someone who absolutely adores crafting thoughtful, personalized presents, this section immediately caught my eye. The recipe I am excited to share with you today, extracted directly from Jamie Oliver’s Christmas Cookbook, is for these decadent Chocolate Truffles. As a self-proclaimed truffle enthusiast, I knew I had to try this recipe. The sheer simplicity of the process, combined with the intriguing instruction to briefly set spiced rum aflame before incorporating it into the chocolate mixture, undoubtedly added to its allure and tempted me into the kitchen.
Embarking on the truffle-making adventure, I found the recipe instructions to be remarkably straightforward, and the list of ingredients refreshingly concise. In what felt like no time at all, the rich, aromatic chocolate mixture was ready. The recipe advised chilling the mixture for two hours before attempting to roll the truffles. While I diligently followed this step, I found the mixture still a bit too soft and challenging to work with after the initial two hours. A quick decision to pop it back into the fridge for additional chilling time proved to be the perfect solution. After this extended refrigeration, the mixture reached the ideal consistency, and the remainder of the process was smooth sailing.
Now, I must confess, having hands coated in chocolate up to the elbows might be an enjoyable part of the culinary process for some, but it is certainly not my preference! I have a distinct aversion to messiness. However, for those who share my sentiment, or even for those who relish a bit of kitchen chaos, the resulting taste of these exquisite chocolate truffles is unequivocally worth every effort. Lightly infused with the warm notes of spiced rum and the delicate fragrance of orange blossom water, their flavor profile is simply divine. They are a testament to the fact that sometimes, a little bit of glorious mess leads to extraordinary results. I am already planning my next batch, complete with a fresh supply of latex gloves and plenty more quality dark chocolate!

Jamie Oliver’s Spiced Rum Chocolate Truffles
By Jamie Oliver
Prep Time: 20 minutes | Cook Time: 15 minutes | Total Time: 35 minutes (plus chilling)
Servings: 30 truffles
Ingredients
- 3 tbsp dark spiced rum
- 300 ml double cream
- 30 g unsalted butter
- 1/2 tsp orange blossom water
- 300 g quality dark chocolate, 70% cocoa solids, finely chopped
- 50 g mixed blanched almonds and hazelnuts, toasted and finely chopped
- Quality cocoa powder, for dusting
- Optional: Sea salt, a pinch
Instructions
- Carefully pour the dark spiced rum into a small saucepan. Heat it gently over a medium flame. Once warm, carefully ignite the rum with a long match (ensure you stand back for safety!). Allow the flames to subside naturally.
- Immediately after the flames die down, add the double cream to the pan and bring the mixture to a gentle simmer, stirring occasionally.
- Remove the pan from the heat. Stir in the unsalted butter and orange blossom water until the butter has completely melted. If desired, add a pinch of sea salt for enhanced flavor.
- Add the finely chopped dark chocolate to the hot cream mixture. Cover the pan with a lid and let it sit undisturbed for about 30 seconds. This allows the residual heat to melt the chocolate.
- Uncover and stir the mixture vigorously until it is smooth and glossy. If the mixture appears to split or curdle, add a splash or two of boiling water (as I did, I found 3 splashes helpful!) and continue stirring until it comes back together.
- Pour the chocolate truffle mixture into a medium-sized bowl. Cover it and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight, until it is firm enough to roll. (Note: I found that 4 hours might still be a bit soft; longer chilling often yields better results).
- While the chocolate chills, prepare your coating. Toast the blanched almonds and hazelnuts in a dry pan over medium heat until fragrant. Let them cool, then finely chop them. Place the chopped nuts on one plate and the quality cocoa powder on another.
- Once the chocolate mixture is firm, scoop small, rounded portions using a spoon. With clean hands (or, for a less messy experience, latex gloves), gently roll the mixture into spheres, forming your truffles.
- Roll each truffle in either the finely chopped nuts or the cocoa powder until evenly coated. For an extra luxurious finish, you could also dip your truffles in melted tempered chocolate.
- Store the prepared truffles in an airtight container in the refrigerator. They are best enjoyed chilled and make wonderful edible gifts.
