Woven Hearts: Valentine’s Day Reflections on Enduring Love

The Enduring Power of Two: A Journey of Love, Partnership, and Shared Growth

As Valentine’s Day approaches, a time often filled with romantic gestures, chocolates, and pink-hued delights, you might expect a blog post brimming with themed recipes. Please forgive my momentary lapse in festive preparations; my mind has been consumed by an intensive academic course, culminating in my first significant exam. The relief of completing it is palpable, and I’m eagerly crossing my fingers for a positive outcome!

Despite the whirlwind, Valentine’s Day holds immense significance in our home. It’s a cherished occasion, always marked by meaningful celebration. So, instead of a recipe this year, I’m honored to share a profoundly beautiful piece penned by my husband, Brad, a few years ago for his own blog. It’s a timeless reflection on love, partnership, and the unique journey we’ve embarked on together. His words resonate deeply with me, and I trust they will touch your heart too, offering a glimpse into the true essence of enduring connection.

Wisdom from Ecclesiastes: The Unbreakable Bond of Two

Among the many profound passages in sacred texts, one from Ecclesiastes holds a particularly special place in our hearts. It was a foundational scripture read at our wedding, its wisdom echoing the very principles we hoped to build our life upon. As I reflected on Valentine’s Day and the beautiful complexity of my relationship with Julia, these verses immediately sprang to mind, capturing the essence of why human connection is so vital and divinely orchestrated:

Two are better than one,
because they have a good return for their labour:
If either of them falls down,
one can help the other up.
But pity anyone who falls
and has no one to help them up.
Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm.
But how can one keep warm alone?
Though one may be overpowered,
two can defend themselves.
A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.

Before embarking on the journey of marriage, my understanding of its divine institution was perhaps superficial. I viewed it primarily through the lens of romantic love, a natural progression for two people who simply “fell in love.” However, a decade of shared life, filled with experiences, challenges, and triumphs, has profoundly deepened my perspective. I now realize that God’s design in bringing us together was far more intricate and purposeful than I could have ever conceived. He saw, with a divine clarity I lacked, the precise help I needed to uncover a deeper, more authentic version of myself—a self that had lain dormant and undiscovered, waiting for the right catalyst.

Unlocking Our Truest Selves: The Role of a Partner in Growth

In my experience as a pastor, I’ve observed a fascinating truth about human nature, much like an iceberg. A significant portion—perhaps as much as 90%—of who we truly are remains hidden beneath the surface, often invisible even to ourselves. Within this unseen realm lies an immense reservoir of strength, untapped potential, creative genius, boundless ambition, profound wisdom, and a myriad of other dormant capabilities. We are, undeniably, far more than we often perceive ourselves to be, and possess a greater capacity to contribute to the world.

Yet, the paradox is that very few of us can access this inner treasure trove entirely on our own. We frequently require the unique insight and unwavering support of another person—someone who possesses the rare ability to see us not merely as we are in our current state, but as we were divinely created to be. This profound responsibility mirrors a Christ-likeness, where, much like Jesus, we look beyond an individual’s brokenness, perceived flaws, or current struggles, to recognize and affirm the magnificent image of God residing within them. A true partner acts as a mirror, reflecting our potential back to us, encouraging us to step into the fullness of our being.

This principle of mutual support and profound connection, of course, extends far beyond the confines of marriage. God’s generosity and wisdom are not exclusive to those who are wedded; singles are equally blessed with opportunities for deep and transformative relationships. The core need remains the same: at some point in our lives, we all require someone who not only knows us casually but intimately. We need a confidant who has access to the deepest recesses of our soul, someone who can meet us as an equal, or perhaps, in many significant ways, someone who inspires us to be better versions of ourselves. And crucially, this is a reciprocal offering; it’s not a one-sided burden where one person carries the other, but rather two individuals moving forward together, united in equality, mutual respect, and reciprocal support.

Julia: The Pillar of My Greatest Accomplishments

For me, this transformative partnership has manifested through Julia. When I reflect upon the moments and achievements in my life of which I am most proud—my greatest accomplishments and hard-won victories—Julia invariably stands in the background, a silent but powerful force who made them possible. Her presence has been the consistent encouragement, the steady hand, and the unwavering belief that has propelled me forward. Perhaps this profound understanding is why the passage from Ecclesiastes resonates so deeply within me, capturing the essence of our shared journey.

A Good Return for Our Labor: Shared Endeavors and Encouragement

“Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labour.” This line, in particular, speaks volumes to our experience. Absolutely, a good return for labor. I know with absolute certainty that I would have left countless opportunities untapped, many dreams unrealized, were it not for her steadfast encouragement. God, in His infinite wisdom, knew I needed someone to provide that gentle but firm “kick” when self-doubt loomed or complacency threatened. The privilege of collaborating and working alongside someone I respect and admire as deeply as I do Julia has been an immeasurable blessing, transforming work into a shared adventure rather than a solitary pursuit.

Navigating Life’s Crises: Clarity, Perspective, and Unwavering Truth

Life, as we all know, is not without its storms. There have been numerous crisis moments throughout our journey—personal challenges, professional setbacks, and unexpected difficulties that have tested our resolve. In these critical junctures, Julia has consistently been the one who can offer a fresh perspective, a crucial insight that I, in my emotional state or tunnel vision, might not have been able to perceive. More than that, she possesses an incredible ability to remind me of the fundamental truths I sometimes forget, anchoring me when the world feels unsteady. Her calm demeanor, sharp intellect, and unwavering belief in our shared values have been an invaluable compass during turbulent times, guiding us back to solid ground.

Beyond Functionality: The Joy of Shared Laughter and Adventure

Yet, our need for each other extends far beyond mere functionality or navigating life’s challenges. It’s the profound realization that the journey itself would be nowhere near as rich, as vibrant, or as enjoyable without her by my side. While life is never perpetually smooth, nor always simple, the shared laughter, the quiet comforts, the silly moments, and the profound joy of simply being together elevate every experience. She transforms ordinary days into extraordinary memories. There isn’t a single other person with whom I would choose to undertake this incredible, winding, and often unpredictable adventure called life.

A Future Woven Together: Gratitude and Enduring Love

So, to Julia, my incredible partner, confidante, and greatest supporter, I extend my deepest gratitude. Thank you for everything. I love you, more than words can express. I eagerly anticipate the many years to come, filled with new experiences, continued growth, and countless moments where we can pause, look back, and truly comprehend how incredibly fortunate we are to have found each other. Our bond, a cord of three strands—us and God—remains unbroken, growing stronger with each passing day.
