The Allure of Meatballs: A Culinary Love Story
For many, meatballs evoke a sense of comfort and culinary adventure. They are a universal dish, transcending cultures with countless variations found across the globe. My own lifelong romance with meatballs is well-documented, evidenced by a collection of 16 diverse meatball recipes. However, I noticed a significant gap: chicken meatball recipes were seriously underrepresented. This oversight propelled me to create a recipe that not only fills that void but also showcases the incredible potential of ground chicken in a truly spectacular way. These Greek-style chicken feta meatballs are the delicious result of that endeavor, designed to offer a lighter yet equally flavorful alternative to traditional beef or pork versions.
If you’re ever not in the mood for rolling meatballs, but still crave that satisfying chicken and tzatziki combination, don’t despair! You can easily pivot to a spiced chicken kebab. Simply marinate and grill some chunky chicken breast pieces for a similar flavor profile with minimal fuss. The key is embracing fresh, bold flavors that transport you straight to the Mediterranean.
Crafting Perfection: The Heart of Greek Chicken Feta Meatballs
What makes these meatballs distinctly Greek? It’s all in the meticulous blend of fresh, aromatic ingredients that capture the essence of Mediterranean cuisine. We start with lean ground chicken, often combined with ground turkey for an even lighter texture and increased protein content. This forms the perfect canvas for our vibrant flavor enhancers. A generous heaping of fresh and dried mint imparts a cool, peppery freshness, reminiscent of Greek landscapes. Zingy oregano, a cornerstone of Greek cooking, adds an earthy, slightly pungent note that ties all the flavors together.
Beyond the herbs, garlic powder provides a deep, savory foundation, while crumbled briny feta cheese introduces a delightful tang and creamy texture that defines many Greek dishes. To bind these incredible ingredients together, we use rich olive oil, a staple of healthy Mediterranean diets, along with a single egg and Panko breadcrumbs. The Panko breadcrumbs are crucial for achieving that desirable tender-yet-firm texture, preventing the meatballs from becoming dense or dry. This careful combination results in meatballs that are robust in flavor, moist, and utterly satisfying.
While I already have a sumptuous Greek meatball recipe featuring tomato-based pork and beef meatballs with orzo pasta, my goal for this particular recipe was to deliver a higher protein and lower fat alternative. These ground chicken meatballs excel in that aspect, offering a healthier profile without compromising on taste. Furthermore, their light and fresh character makes them incredibly versatile. Unlike heavier, sauce-laden meatballs, these can be wrapped in warm pita bread, served alongside crisp salads, or simply dipped into a variety of sauces, offering endless meal possibilities.

Essential Tips for Flawless Chicken Feta Meatballs
Unlock the Secrets to Perfect Meatballs: Expert Tips and Notes
- Choosing Your Ground Meat: This recipe utilizes a combination of ground chicken and ground turkey for a balanced texture and flavor. However, feel free to use either one exclusively based on your preference or what’s available. Both options yield delicious results.
- Preventing Dryness: Chicken and turkey are lean meats, which means they are prone to drying out if overcooked. It is crucial to follow the cooking instructions precisely to ensure your meatballs remain juicy and tender. Avoid prolonged baking or frying times.
- The Art of Browning: While optional, taking the extra time to brown your meatballs in a pan before baking is highly recommended. This step develops a beautiful golden crust, adds depth of flavor, and enhances the overall texture, transforming them from pale to gloriously golden. If time is genuinely tight, you can skip this step and bake them directly, but for the best outcome, don’t rush the browning.
- The Perfect Dip Pairing: Greek chicken meatballs practically beg for an equally Greek accompaniment. My top choice is the classic Tzatziki, with its cooling cucumber and tangy yogurt. However, don’t limit yourself! These versatile meatballs pair wonderfully with many dips. A creamy whipped ricotta with roasted cherry tomatoes and basil pesto would be an exceptional alternative, adding a different dimension of flavor.
- Party Appetizer Perfection: Their convenient size, light texture, and incredible flavor make these juicy meatballs and tzatziki an excellent addition to any party appetizer menu. They are easy to serve, satisfying, and always a crowd-pleaser.

Serving Suggestions: From Quick Lunch to Grand Mezze Feasts
The beauty of these Greek-inspired chicken feta meatballs lies in their incredible versatility. They can be a speedy and satisfying lunch fix or transform into the star of an elaborate Hellenic banquet. Here are a few ideas to get your culinary creativity flowing:
Effortless Lunch Wraps:
For a portable, wholesome, and incredibly satisfying lunchtime meal, take a warm homemade flatbread or soft pita. Slather it generously with the cool, creamy tzatziki dip, then stuff it with 3 or 4 of the juicy chicken meatballs. Add plenty of fresh, crisp green salad or a handful of peppery arugula for extra texture and nutrients. This combination provides a perfect balance of protein, fresh vegetables, and tangy flavors, making it a truly delightful midday treat.
The Ultimate Mezze Spread:
Thinking bigger? These meatballs are ideal for building an impressive Greek-inspired mezze platter that will delight your guests. Make a generous batch of chicken feta meatballs and serve them alongside an array of colorful dips and salads. In my opinion, one dip is never enough! Consider adding smoky red pepper muhammara, which offers a robust counterpoint to the chicken and is utterly irresistible. And, of course, no mezze is complete without a smooth and creamy classic hummus, perhaps topped with a sprinkle of za’atar and a drizzle of olive oil.
To round out your mezze, include a vibrant salad. My orzo pasta salad with grilled zucchini is an excellent choice, bursting with ripe tomatoes, briny Kalamata olives, and drenched in a zesty oregano vinaigrette. It’s not only incredibly flavorful but also a fantastic option for any vegan diners at your table. Don’t forget to include piles of steaming fresh bread, perfect for swiping up every last bit of the delicious dips and tucking your meatballs into. Chewy naan bread, surprisingly easy to make, serves as a wonderful alternative to smaller flatbreads and is fantastic for feeding a crowd.
Storage, Freezing, and Reheating: Enjoying Your Leftovers
This chicken feta meatball recipe is designed to be generous, typically yielding around 24 balls, which translates to about 6 servings, depending on appetites. This makes it perfect for meal prepping or having delicious leftovers on hand. If you anticipate having a surplus, freezing the cooked meatballs is an excellent option to extend their shelf life and convenience.
Freezing Instructions:
To freeze, allow the cooked meatballs to cool completely. Arrange them in a single layer on a baking sheet and flash freeze until solid (about 1-2 hours). Once frozen, transfer them to a freezer-safe airtight container or heavy-duty freezer bag. They will keep beautifully for up to 2 months in the freezer. When ready to enjoy, you can reheat them directly from frozen.
Refrigeration and Reheating:
Any leftover meatballs that you plan to consume within a few days can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for 2-3 days. For reheating, you have several convenient options:
- Microwave: Place meatballs in a microwave-safe dish, cover, and heat on high for 1-2 minutes or until heated through. Stirring occasionally ensures even heating.
- Air Fryer: For a crispy exterior, reheat in an air fryer at 350°F (175°C) for 5-8 minutes, shaking the basket occasionally.
- Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Place meatballs on a baking sheet, cover loosely with foil to prevent drying, and bake for 10-15 minutes or until thoroughly warmed.
These methods ensure your leftovers are just as delicious and satisfying as the freshly cooked batch.

Chicken Feta Meatballs
By Julia Frey of Vikalinka
Prep: 20 mins | Cook: 20 mins | Total: 40 mins
Servings: 6 people

Chicken feta meatballs with tzatziki dip are a protein-rich, herb-fresh delight that can be ready in around 30 minutes.
Ingredients
For the Meatballs
- 1kg / 2lbs ground chicken, or turkey (or the combination of the two)
- 1 egg
- 1 tsp dried oregano
- 1 tbsp fresh mint, chopped or 1/2 tsp dried mint
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 75g / 3/4 cup Panko breadcrumbs
- 100g / 3½ oz feta
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tbsp olive oil
For the Dip
- 250ml / 1 cup Greek yoghurt, plain
- 50ml / 1/3 cup grated cucumber
- 1/2 tsp fresh mint, chopped or 1/4 tsp dried mint
- 1/2 lemon, juice only
- Salt to taste
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine the ground chicken, 1 egg, dried oregano, mint, garlic powder, breadcrumbs, crumbled feta, and salt. Mix very well until all ingredients are thoroughly combined. (I prefer using my hands for mixing and an ice cream scoop for shaping meatballs for consistency.) You should yield approximately 24-25 meatballs.
- Preheat your oven to 200°C (400°F).
- Heat a tablespoon of olive oil in a large frying pan over medium-high heat. Brown the meatballs in batches until they are golden on the outside but not cooked all the way through. Avoid overcrowding the pan to ensure proper browning. Once browned, transfer the meatballs to a rimmed baking sheet and finish cooking in the preheated oven for 8-10 minutes, or until the internal temperature reaches 74°C (165°F).
- Alternatively, if you are short on time, you can skip the browning step and simply bake the meatballs directly in the oven for 15-20 minutes, depending on their size, or until they reach an internal temperature of 74°C (165°F).
- While the meatballs are in the oven, prepare the tzatziki dip. Grate the cucumber, then place it in a clean kitchen cloth or paper towel and squeeze out any excess liquid. Discard the liquid. In a medium bowl, combine the Greek yogurt, grated or pressed garlic, fresh lemon juice, the squeezed grated cucumber, finely chopped fresh mint (or dried mint), and salt to taste. Mix well to combine all ingredients. Let the dip sit for at least 10 minutes for the flavors to meld beautifully. Serve the creamy tzatziki dip alongside your hot Greek chicken feta meatballs.
