Our Swedish Family Adventure

Exploring Sweden with Family: An Unforgettable Scandinavian Adventure

For many families across the UK and beyond, the summer holiday compass almost invariably points south. Spain’s sunny coasts, Greece’s ancient wonders, and the Mediterranean’s warm embrace are undeniably powerful draws. So, when we shared our summer plans to venture through Norway en route to a family getaway in Sweden, it certainly raised a few eyebrows among our friends.

It’s not that people dislike Sweden or Norway; quite the contrary. These Scandinavian nations are widely admired for their efficiency, stunning landscapes, and high quality of life. However, for most, they simply don’t register as prime destinations for a classic family summer holiday, often being associated more with adventure sports or city breaks. And this, we discovered, is a real shame, because Sweden, particularly its wilder heartlands, offers a truly wonderful and unique family experience.

Unveiling the Charms of Dalarna: Sweden’s Wilderness Heart

Our Swedish adventure focused primarily on the region of Dalarna, situated far north and bordering Norway. This picturesque county is often considered the most “Swedish” of Sweden’s provinces, known for its vibrant folk traditions, red timber cottages, and pristine natural beauty. It’s a cherished escape for city-dwelling Swedes seeking tranquility and a deep connection with nature, often making the drive to their beloved weekend cottages.

Dalarna is not a destination for bustling cityscapes or crowded tourist attractions. Instead, its allure lies in its unspoiled environment. Small, charming communities like Idre, Särna, and Grövelsjön dot the landscape, offering just the essentials: well-stocked grocery stores, petrol stations, and shops catering to outdoor enthusiasts. These villages serve as gateways to boundless natural exploration rather than destinations in themselves. Indeed, at one point during our journey, somewhere north of Drevsjø, we found the reindeer began to outnumber the people, a clear sign of the immersive wilderness experience that awaited us.

Nature’s Grandeur: Forests, Lakes, and Unexpected Wildlife Encounters

The terrain in Dalarna is nothing short of breathtaking. Unending, ancient forests carpet dramatic rolling hills, creating a majestic panorama that changes with every turn. Crystal-clear lakes appear around every bend, their shores often boasting some of the most stunning, pristine beaches we’ve ever encountered. While undeniably beautiful, we quickly learned that the water, even during the height of summer, retains a refreshing chill – perhaps a bit too nippy for prolonged swimming for most, but certainly invigorating!

One of the most memorable aspects of traversing this region was the omnipresence of reindeer. They seemed to be everywhere, particularly in the middle of highways. On otherwise deserted roads, these majestic creatures proved to be a legitimate, albeit charming, hazard. They were utterly unfazed by car horns, seemingly quite content to continue whatever intriguing activity they were engaged in – often licking the road surface. The exact reason for this behavior remains a mystery, but their preference for road-licking over moving was quite pronounced!

Encountering wildlife, especially reindeer, is a truly magical part of a Swedish family holiday. It’s a constant reminder that you are immersed in a truly wild and untamed environment. For families, these sightings become cherished memories and fantastic photo opportunities. Just remember to drive carefully, especially at dawn and dusk, and always give these creatures their space.

Warm Welcomes: Swedish Hospitality for Visiting Families

Before our journey, I had heard the somewhat prevalent stereotype of Scandinavians being reserved or “cold.” If this perception holds true for some, it’s a profound misrepresentation of our experience. We received the warmest of welcomes everywhere we went, characterized by a remarkable willingness to assist us whenever we had a question or needed help. This genuine hospitality greatly contributed to making our family trip seamless and enjoyable.

The widespread fluency in English among Swedes was an immense advantage. Cashiers, shopkeepers, and even casual passers-by would often switch to English as soon as we approached, making communication effortless. I suspect our distinct lack of Gore-Tex and fleece outerwear, a common sight on Swedes embracing the outdoors, probably confirmed our foreign status more effectively than any passport ever could!

Savoring Sweden: Eating In and Dining Out on a Family Budget

We had been well-warned about the notoriously high cost of eating out in Sweden, with restaurant visits often requiring a considerable budget. This served as ample incentive for us to make excellent use of our cottage kitchen. While groceries are indeed more expensive than what we’re accustomed to in the UK, they are by no means prohibitively so. A rough estimate would place grocery costs around 25% higher than in the UK – a noticeable difference, but certainly not a deal-breaker for a well-planned family trip.

Supermarkets are incredibly well-stocked, offering everything you might need, including a surprisingly good selection of Mexican food products and wonderfully fresh shrimp on ice. So, despite Sweden’s well-deserved reputation as a fairly expensive destination, there are definite strategies to make it work for a family budget. It all starts with choosing the right accommodation. While we at Vikalinka always champion staying in places with a kitchen, it becomes an absolute essential in a country like Sweden.

When planning your meals, resist the temptation to replicate your home cuisine. Embrace local foods, which are often superior in quality and far better priced. Observe what locals are buying at the market or grocery store – they usually know best. Fortunately, the flavors in traditional Swedish food are generally comforting and familiar, making them palatable for most families. Simple dishes like beef hash and waffles were huge hits with our kids.

For adults, a note on beverages: low-alcohol beer can be found in regular grocery stores. For anything stronger, including wines and spirits, you’ll need to visit one of the official state-run Systembolaget stores. The selection is impressively international, with a commendable focus on excellent Swedish lagers. Don’t miss the opportunity to try traditional Swedish liquors, such as the classic aquavit, and if you can find it, a remarkable and potent elderflower liqueur whose name, regrettably, we failed to record.

Embracing the Outdoors: Activities for Families in the Swedish Wilderness

I have rarely encountered a country so intrinsically linked to its wilderness as Sweden. And with such incredible natural beauty on offer, who can blame them? The Swedish government actively encourages this connection through policies like “Allemansrätten,” or the “Right to Roam,” which permits free access to nature. This means tents can be pitched almost anywhere with a bit of space (respecting private property), and trailheads are abundant, easy to find, and exceptionally well-marked, making family hikes accessible and enjoyable for all ages. Even historic sites are often presented in a way that encourages outdoor exploration rather than confinement to dusty museums.

Foraging Adventures: A Family Highlight

A true highlight for our family was the joy of finding our own food. Blueberries carpeted the forest floor everywhere we went. Picking them is certainly labor-intensive, but with all the time in the world, it was a wonderfully rewarding investment of our afternoons. We heard tantalizing rumors of cloudberries and lingonberries but, despite our best efforts, weren’t able to locate any – perhaps due to our inexperience or simply being in the wrong season or spot.

Mushroom hunting comes with inherent risks for the uninitiated, but with the aid of Google’s image recognition and careful cross-referencing, we managed to identify safe varieties and avoid anything questionable. I am now utterly converted to wild mushrooms; their intense flavor makes store-bought varieties seem a bit bland in comparison. This hands-on experience of foraging connects children and adults alike with nature in a truly profound way.

Lakes and Beaches: Cool Dips and Cozy Fires

The pristine lakes we discovered throughout Dalarna offered some of the most stunning beaches imaginable, made even more appealing by being almost entirely deserted. Swimming, however, is an activity best reserved for the brave, the foolish, or more likely, a spirited combination of the two. The water, even on the warmest summer days, is undeniably cold – “bloody cold,” as we described it. You might still enjoy a quick dip, but don’t expect to last long! There’s a good reason why these beautiful beaches are often well-equipped with firepits, perfect for warming up afterward and enjoying a family picnic.

Practical Tips for a Safe Wilderness Experience

It’s crucial to remember that you are truly in the wilderness, and venturing into it always comes with inherent risks. The weather can change rapidly and unpredictably, with temperatures dropping surprisingly quickly, even in summer. Mobile phone reception can become sporadic or disappear entirely precisely when you need it most. Always approach outdoor activities with the right gear – think layers, waterproofs, and sturdy footwear – and sensible precautions. Inform someone of your route and expected return time, especially for longer hikes. This preparation ensures a safe and enjoyable exploration of Sweden’s magnificent natural playgrounds.

Sweden: A Unique Family Holiday Destination

There are truly few places in the world that offer such a perfect balance of comfort, safety, and genuine wilderness as Sweden. It’s a country that blends the best aspects of a highly developed civilization with expansive, untouched natural beauty. This unique combination should firmly place a family visit to Sweden on every traveler’s must-do list. While the perceived cost might initially deter budget travelers or larger families, a little creativity, strategic planning, and, crucially, a cottage with a well-equipped kitchen, can make this extraordinary Scandinavian adventure accessible to everyone.

Embrace the call of the wild, the calm of the lakes, and the warmth of Swedish hospitality for your next family holiday. You might just discover your new favorite summer destination.
